SAFTU joins EFF to shut the country down on 20 March 2023.

The South African Federation of Trade Unions has joined the EFF’s planned shutdown 20 March 2023.  SAFTU may, under the Labour Relations Act undertake protected protest action to promote the social and economic interests of workers.  NEDLAC has confirmed that the planned protest has met the requirements of the Labour Relations Act, and is therefore protected by the LRA.

The principle of “no-work-no-pay and no disciplinary action” is applicable.

Employees should be advised that they will receive no payment for the day if they are absent, that overtime will only be paid once the required 45 hour weekly maximum working hours are reached, they will lose their shifts for the day if they are absent.

The action is conveniently wedged between the weekend and Human Rights Day.  Employers can arrange with employees to work that day in on another day to avoid the effects of the shutdown.
